Your focus on Dalian

International Woman’s Day was first celebrated in 1911.This event generally celebrates the achievements of women around the world as well as raising awareness to the issues and difficulties that occur and need to be addressed. Rather than a global theme, different countries and organizations choose themes that are appropriate for them.  In the past, for example, themes have been ‘Women in decision-making’ or ‘Women uniting for peace’.

Here are some of the suggestions that we got:

1) Huang Haisu (Christina)

Theme: Women as Agents of Change

Reason: What Katya did for Dalian community says it all.  

2) Thomas Grant

Theme: women on leather

Reasons: fun for both sexes; would lighten the mood in dark economic times (think screwball film comedies of the 1930s); great opportunity for creativity; low-cost; PC-free; participation available to all regardless of age, race, education, social status, etc.; TREMENDOUS publicity potential for Woman's Day (which now gets no attention at all in the US). Win-win, right?

3) Margaret

Theme:Teen mother and child support

Reason: Young mothers and their children need to be protected financially, medically and should be educated.

4) Vivian

Theme: Upgrade ourselves 

Reason: Learn more things and do more things by ourselves so that men may respect us more.

5) Alice

Theme: Focus on Health

Reason: Mentally and physically, do more sports, dance, watch movies, listen to music so as to have greater self  esteem.

6) Lina

Theme: Security from Public theft

Reason: there are many women robbed in the streets and many are defenseless so there is a need to enhance women’s general security in public - eg theft on the subway, busses, street etc

7) Angela

Theme: Protect women’s physical labor rights

Reason: Protecting women as vulnerable beings as well as their rights.

8) Claude

Theme: Red Roses

Reason: Women are sensitive, fragile and delicate.

9) XiaoXiao

Theme: Pay attention to women’s health, and stay away from women diseases.

Reason: Health is wealth. Modern people are living at a very fast pace with great pressure. Women diseases influence women’s life. So we should pay more attention to women’s health.

10) Tim

Theme: Keep an eye on your men

Reason: I once heard a radio program in which the topic was war and conflict. The speakers argued that 99% of the violence in the world and almost all atrocities in wars were carried out by men in their late teens and 20s. Violence, in other words, was largely a problem of adolescent males. With that in mind I would suggest as a theme for International Woman's Day "Women, keep an eye on your men".

11) Jenny

Theme: Spoil yourself

Reason: Women's day gives me an excuse to release myself and spoil myself. On the way to pursuing my dream, I usually forget to soften myself. I'd like to make myself just like a little women to enjoy this special day. Sweet day!
