Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival is indeed one of China’s famous festivals that takes place on the 5th day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, this year it will be taking place on June 23rd and with this festival will come the famous Zongzi (glutinous rice dumpling) that is covered in bamboo leaves. Of course the highlight of this festival is the race of boats that are carved out into dragons. The mythology that was the root to this festive time begins with a famous poet by the name of Qu Yuan who drowned in the Miluo River. When the people heard that, they tried to save him but could not recover his body from the river. And so as to not let the fish eat him they threw Zongzi into the river. Henceforth people have commemorated Qu Yuan with the famous Dragon boat festival every year. Today the dragon boat festival has become international!

Our reader’s encounter with a dragon boat maker in Dalian
A few weeks ago I met one of my neighbors whose family has a factory in Wafangdian which makes many of the modern Dragon boats used in competitions all over the world.
She told me how lucky she was to have travelled to different countries with her family and how surprised she was by the enthusiasm and diversity of people who participate in the races. When she was growing up, the family business was not very interesting to her and she wasn't very eager to help out. Of course that all changed after her first trip abroad opened her eyes to a more meaningful picture. The experience instilled a sense of connectedness in her, filling her with a deeper understanding and appreciation for all the hard work and sacrifices her family has made over the years.
Check out their website (www.dragonboats.cn) for more pictures and info. If a few of you readers are interested in a factory tour, perhaps one can be arranged.
